\"Above&Below2\"Two local artists, one taking photos on land, the other underwater, have\u00a0collaborated to produce \u0093Above and Below the Pond\u0094 which opens February 2\u00a0at the Snow Library\u0092s Craine Gallery in Orleans. It is free and open to\u00a0the public. Susan Baur of North Falmouth, known for writing and\u00a0illustrating the Turtle Sisters of Cape Cod books, and Marcy Ford of\u00a0Harwich, known for her nature and wildlife photographs, have teamed up to\u00a0illustrate the hidden life that thrives both above and below the surface\u00a0of Cape Cod ponds.<\/p>\n

Focussing their attention on ponds from Wellfleet to Falmouth, the two\u00a0have roamed the woods, combed the shores, and swum through weedy ponds\u00a0to record both the beauty and the daily habits of the creatures who live\u00a0in and around the pond ecosystem. They have captured everything from\u00a0kingfishers and dragon flies who live above the ponds, to swans and\u00a0plant life that live on the surface and at the edges, to the painted\u00a0turtles, snappers, and musk turtles who live in the muddy bottom. For\u00a0both women wandering alone through Nature is what makes them happy.\u00a0I enjoy being out in the woods, by the ponds at the beaches throughout\u00a0the year,\u0094 said Ford. \u0093There is so much to see in every season on the\u00a0Cape, and I love photographing everything from full landscapes, to the\u00a0birds and animals,\u00a0all the way down to the tiniest insect or snowflake. Photographing nature\u00a0is my zen!<\/p>\n

Baur emphasizes the obstacles she\u0092s had to overcome, like freezing water\u00a0in November, thick stands of dark weeds, and territorial male snapping\u00a0turtles the size of small tanks who chase her.\u00a0The centerpiece of the exhibit is a 12-month calendar display that both\u00a0shows and tells what is happening above and below ponds throughout the\u00a0year. Baur\u0092s enlarged copies of The Turtle Sisters 2015 Calendar which\u00a0follows the lives of pond turtles and explains what they are doing each\u00a0month, are augmented by Fords seasonal photos which show what\u0092s going on\u00a0above the water.<\/p>\n

A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, February 7, from\u00a0noon to 2 p.m. Attendees at the reception will be given a copy of The\u00a0Turtle Sisters 2015 Calendar. The calendar is supported in part by a\u00a0grant from The Chatham Cultural Council, a local agency which is\u00a0supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The\u00a0Craine Gallergy is open during regular Snow Library hours. The show\u00a0closes February 28.<\/p>\n

Marcy Ford\u0092s work has been featured in Cape Cod Magazine, Chatham\u00a0Magazine and at local photography shows. Susan Baur\u0092s mixed media\u00a0collages made up of underwater photographs have appeared in the Turtle\u00a0Sisters books and at The Greenbriar Nature Center in east Sandwich and\u00a0the Cotuit Center for the Arts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
