Unique among pines of New England, it is tolerant of salt, herbivory, injury, and fire, often relying on the wildfires to clear space for colonization. As a stress response, it often sprouts new shoot growth, of which the cone\u2019s needles are thick and rigid compared to other pine species.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Haudenosaunee, Shinnecock, and Cherokee have used pitch pine wood for construction and carving, as well as the resin to treat ills such as burns, cuts, constipation, boils, and inflammation, among others. Its seeds, dispersed throughout the fall and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6787\" src=\"https:\/\/sandieboxx.com\/grapes\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-12-400x264.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sandieboxx.com\/grapes\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-12-400x264.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/sandieboxx.com\/grapes\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-12-768x507.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sandieboxx.com\/grapes\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-12.jpeg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>winter, are consumed by numerous mammal and bird species, including deer, squirrels, pine grosbeaks, pine warblers, wild turkeys, and blue jays.
