Its Latin species name translates to \u201clarch-like larch,\u201d defining it as a deciduous conifer. The flat, soft needles are produced in dense clusters of spirals on short shoots with a bluish-green color that turns yellow before they fall. Indeed, in New England, it is the only coniferous tree to have this quality, standing apart from the more ubiquitous evergreen pines.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7028 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sandieboxx.com\/grapes\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-102.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sandieboxx.com\/grapes\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-102.jpeg 667w, https:\/\/sandieboxx.com\/grapes\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-102-400x300.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/>An extremely cold-tolerant boreal species, it is able to survive in temperatures less than -85\u2109, though it tends to reach heights shorter than its typical 70-100 feet at such extremes. Further, able to endure and reproduce in a wide range of soils, it is usually an early-successional species in areas recently disturbed by fire.
