The individual will work under the Executive Director and will serve as primary supervisor to the Land Stewardship Technician. They will oversee monitoring and stewardship of 500 acres owned by OCT and 160 acres under OCT Conservation Restrictions (CRs). They will oversee habitat management efforts and public access opportunities to OCT properties, including several walking trails. They will also manage relationships and neighbors with abutters to facilitate OCT\u2019s stewardship work and further our mission. They will be the lead staff person in managing OCT\u2019s Volunteer Land Steward Program and will recruit, train, and supervise volunteers. Willingness and availability to work occasional evenings and weekends required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orleans Conservation Trust Background:<br \/>\n<\/strong>OCT is a private nonprofit land trust, founded in 1970. Our mission is to protect and restore natural lands \u2014<br \/>\nfor people and wildlife, the health of our waters, and the character of our community. The Trust acquires and<br \/>\nmanages land to enhance habitat, provides opportunities for learning and for enjoying nature, promotes<br \/>\nsound conservation practices, and works with landowners who wish to conserve property. We host regular<br \/>\nguided walks and educational lectures, and we maintain several trails on OCT properties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The ideal candidate will have:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Passion for environmental protection<br \/>\n\u2022 Bachelor\u2019s degree or higher in a field related to environmental conservation or equivalent work experience<br \/>\n\u2022 At least three years of relevant work experience in a land management setting<br \/>\n\u2022 Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with the public<br \/>\n\u2022 Experience supervising staff and working as part of a team and independently<br \/>\n\u2022 Significant experience with invasive plant control and operation of outdoor maintenance equipment<br \/>\n\u2022 Experience recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers in an outdoor work setting<br \/>\n\u2022 Good orientation skills and navigational ability<br \/>\n\u2022 Proficiency with Microsoft Office<br \/>\n\u2022 Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills<br \/>\n\u2022 Demonstrated good judgement<br \/>\n\u2022 Clear written and verbal communication skills<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsibilities include:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Supervise the Land Stewardship Technician to most effectively meet OCT\u2019s stewardship goals.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ensure OCT CRs are regularly monitored and documents are kept updated. Ensure that CR landowners<br \/>\nunderstand the restrictions on their property and that any violations are documented and addressed.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ensure OCT fee simple properties are monitored appropriately and that maintenance needs (e.g., downed trees<br \/>\non trails, encroachment from neighboring properties, erosion, vandalism, invasive vegetation, etc.) are<br \/>\ndocumented and promptly addressed as appropriate.<br \/>\n\u2022 Maintain organized files for each of OCT\u2019s properties and Conservation Restrictions.<br \/>\n\u2022 Work with the Land Management Committee, including assisting the chair in setting the agenda and leading<br \/>\nmonthly Committee meetings.<br \/>\n\u2022 Work with the Executive Director and the Land Management Committee to prioritize land stewardship projects,<br \/>\nincluding ecological restoration work and public access infrastructure improvements (i.e., parking areas, trails,<br \/>\nsignage, etc.) to set the annual work plan and budget for land stewardship activities. Manage the budget<br \/>\nutilizing contractors, staff, and volunteers to advance OCT\u2019s goals.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ensure maintenance of past land stewardship projects.<br \/>\n\u2022 Respond to abutters as needed, and review filings with the Conservation Commission or other Town agencies, if<br \/>\nand when OCT is notified of abutters\u2019 work plans.<br \/>\n\u2022 Complete annual mowing of early successional habitat and \u201cpile-burning\u201d of brush piles accumulated from<br \/>\nmanagement activities.<br \/>\n\u2022 Identify and prioritize among<br \/>\n\u2022 Obtain plot plans and deeds and prepare maps to add to files as necessary.<br \/>\n\u2022 Engage with supporters, trail users, and abutters to educate the public about OCT\u2019s stewardship work.<br \/>\n\u2022 Safely operate and maintain land stewardship equipment and keep clean, organized facilities for a safe and<br \/>\nefficient work environment (e.g. shed, pickup truck, etc.). Help with maintenance of OCT Office property and<br \/>\nfacilities.<br \/>\n\u2022 Recruit and train volunteers and organize volunteer projects.<br \/>\n\u2022 Coordinate with Town officials regarding land stewardship issues.<br \/>\n\u2022 Oversee AmeriCorps Cape Cod (ACC) service member and work with staff to apply for and coordinate ACC Group<br \/>\nService Projects.<br \/>\n\u2022 Implement land management plans, using best management practices; update existing plans as needed.<br \/>\n\u2022 Assist with OCT\u2019s educational programming, including leading walks and educating attendees about natural<br \/>\nhistory and OCT\u2019s work.<br \/>\n\u2022 Assist in gathering photos for OCT\u2019s communications work in the course of land stewardship work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Required Skills:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 highly organized;<br \/>\n\u2022 ability to work effectively with others and individually;<br \/>\n\u2022 ability to effectively manage conflict;<br \/>\n\u2022 ability to safely operate and maintain land stewardship equipment<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical Demands:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 The Director of Land Stewardship must be physically capable of performing land stewardship activities, with or<br \/>\nwithout reasonable accommodation. This includes the ability to use and maintain power and hand tools and to<br \/>\nlift 50 pounds.<br \/>\n\u2022 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
